The United States Association of Applied Sciences found that onion extract has the same effect as modern chemotherapeutic methods in the treatment of colon cancer, as well as colorectal cancer. In their new research project, scientists have determined that "onion" therapy is safer than the use of chemical drugs with a number of side effects.
Preliminary experiments on rodents showed that the use of onion extract did not lead to a sharp increase in cholesterol in the blood, on the contrary, there were tendencies to reduce it. Now, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy have a sharp increase in cholesterol in the blood, which is quite a serious problem, since high cholesterol can provoke a stroke, heart attack.
During a comprehensive study, experts found that onion extract reduced the rate of colon cancer spread by almost 70% (compared to rodents that did not receive anti-cancer therapy). In the group of rodents that underwent chemotherapy, the rate of cancer spread decreased by 68%, but the health of the rodents that received onion extract was much better, since they did not have to endure the severe consequences of chemotherapy.
Experts are trying to find an alternative to chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer patients, since such treatment (depending on the drug) can cause more than a hundred different side effects, which often occur after the first procedure. The most common side effects of chemotherapy are hair loss, blindness (temporary), loss of the ability to speak, paralysis, seizures, coma. The greatest danger after chemotherapy is metabolic disorders, which provoke an increase in the level of bad cholesterol.
Experts have high hopes for a new method using onion extract to treat cancer patients. Specialists admit that onion extract alone may not stop the development of cancer or push the disease into remission, but the fact that such treatment can significantly slow down the progression of cancer is an undeniable advantage. In addition, this research project plays a major role in the development of complex treatment for intestinal oncology.
At this stage, specialists are trying to combine onion extract with other active substances. In the future, they hope to obtain quite highly effective drugs that will increase the survival rate among patients suffering from bowel cancer.
Scientists have repeatedly studied the beneficial properties of onions. Several years ago, it was found that regular consumption of onions, as well as garlic, helps reduce severe manifestations of hip osteoarthritis, which causes severe pain and leads to loss of ability to work. As it turned out, diallyl disulfide, which is part of garlic and onions, reduces the level of enzymes that have a destructive effect on cartilage.
