Over the past 10 years, medicine and science have made a huge step forward, more and more new effective treatment methods, diagnostic procedures, and medications are appearing. It is especially worth noting such a disease as psoriasis or psoriasis, the causes of which are still unclear, the mechanism of development is quite complex, in addition, the disease is characterized by a recurrent course.
According to scientists, the disease can be kept under control with the help of biopreparations.
Specialists decided to use biological drugs for the treatment of psoriasis after the understanding of the causes of the disease changed. Therapy that was usually prescribed for this disease (local agents, phototherapy) helped to eliminate only external symptoms and to some extent helped to prevent relapse.
But the action of biological drugs is aimed at the cause of the disease - they directly or indirectly block T-cells, immune agents that provoke inflammation on the skin. It is worth noting that immunosuppressive drugs have a similar principle of action, but unlike biological drugs, they cause serious side effects. In addition, new biological drugs are distinguished by a narrow focus on the source of the disease.
Biological therapy is a new type of treatment, and there are not many drugs approved for use today. Among the approved biologics are Enbrel, Amevive, Remicade, Humira, Stelara. Just like immunosuppressants, biologics lead to a decrease in immunity, as a result of which the body remains unprotected against viruses and bacteria. In addition, there is a risk of developing chronic diseases, such as tuberculosis. Given this, starting biological therapy after taking drugs with an immunosuppressive effect is considered inappropriate.
Among the disadvantages of biological treatment is the method of implementation: biological preparations are administered intravenously or intramuscularly. Intravenous administration of drugs takes about 2 hours, but despite some inconveniences, a number of specialists believe that biological treatment is more effective, and also causes a minimum of side effects.
Psoriasis is a chronic disorder of the immune system. The disease causes red spots, cracks, and peeling on the skin. During exacerbations of the disease, it is quite difficult to hide the symptoms and almost all patients experience severe discomfort. It is worth noting that the symptoms of psoriasis cause serious psychological problems, a person often becomes an outcast in society, people try to avoid any contact with psoriasis patients, believing that the disease is contagious.
A study conducted several years ago showed that more than half of patients with psoriasis constantly feel inferior, respondents also noted that they experience a constant feeling of embarrassment due to the manifestations of the disease, in 1/3 of patients, social life and communication with others are sharply limited during exacerbations.
