Asian region actively exports fish containing unsafe levels of antibiotics

The Asian region is actively exporting fish containing unsafe levels of antibiotics, a study by the Australian Department of Agriculture has found.

According to experts, a similar influx of harmful products is observed this year. Five batches of fish from Vietnam have already been put on the "black list". They failed the biosafety check due to the high concentration of enrofloxacin. For comparison: three batches of the same fish, which raised doubts among experts, were identified throughout last year.

The antibiotic enrofloxacin is considered to be very effective in combating gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms that are resistant to other antibiotics. In addition to fish, this drug is also used for cattle.

Overall, more than 1,000 imported products have failed inspection in Australia since 2010. The first place was taken by goods from China. Then came products from India, Italy, Japan, Korea and France. In addition to antibiotics, they were found to contain listeria and cholera vibrios.
