American scientists have developed a unique drug for the treatment of schizophrenia; in addition, the drug has shown good results in depressive and mental disorders.
Scientists have stated that pills will soon help in the treatment of mental health problems, in particular, schizophrenia. The new drug was developed by specialists from Vanderbilt University.
Schizophrenia is a mental illness and, as scientists assume, the disorder appeared in humans in the process of evolution during the period when humans developed intelligence. It was believed that schizophrenia was an innate and incurable disease and all the drugs that were ever created only reduced the acute manifestations of the disorder during periods of exacerbation, in addition, all drugs of this kind had severe side effects.
Over the past decades, many drugs have been created, some of them are quite effective, but they cannot completely rid the patient of the disease. As already mentioned, such drugs are quite difficult for patients to tolerate, and the course of treatment to achieve the best result is long, often, after the drugs are discontinued, severe symptoms return again and the disease progresses.
The new project is being financed by the US Department of Defense and work in this area has shown that schizophrenia develops as a result of an excessive amount of the hormone dopamine in the body, which causes a feeling of satisfaction and pleasure. During the research, scientists were able to control the level of this hormone in the body of the experiment participants and at this stage work is underway to restore cognitive functions in patients with schizophrenia.
Experts also found that the drug is effective in treating other mental health problems, as well as depression.
According to the researchers themselves, the new drug will help completely get rid of most mental problems, and it is possible that it will be used to treat military personnel who participated in combat operations. Scientists assume that the drug will be injected directly into the brain for treatment.
Scientists have been looking for methods of treating schizophrenia for a long time, last year German specialists found out how to prevent the development of mental problems. Research has shown that fatty foods contain important elements that protect against mental problems and can also prevent the development of schizophrenia.
These conclusions were made after an experiment involving 80 people who were divided into 2 groups, one of which included omega-3 in the diet of the participants, while in the other, the consumption of essential fats was limited.
The results surprised even scientists - in one group, where participants ate unsaturated fatty acids, only 2 people suffered from mental illnesses (schizophrenia, psychosis, etc.), while in the other - 11 people. This work, according to experts, clearly indicates a connection between the use of unsaturated fatty acids and the likelihood of developing mental illnesses.
