The new year 2016 can become a landmark for science and medicine, because this year will begin testing a unique drug from old age. According to experts, if the drug shows on people the same stunning results, as in the case of animals, for medicine this will be a huge leap forward. The new drug will extend life to an average of 115 years, while feeling completely normal throughout life.
Scottish Professor Gordon Lithgow studied the aging of the human body for more than 20 years. According to the professor, earlier conversations about the suspension of the aging process belonged to the category of fiction, but today there is every reason to believe that it is quite possible to influence the biological processes of the organism. A quarter of a century ago, scientists could not explain why people grow old, they develop "age" illnesses, etc., but today it is no longer a mystery for science which processes occur in the human body during life.
According to Lithgow, if a person learns to slow down the aging process, almost all the diseases that are caused by age-related changes can be stopped. The professor is sure that the rapid technological process will contribute to the development of medicine for old age, because today the aging of the organism is not a mystery, but a task that scientists must certainly solve.
The basis of the new medication for old age is laid by Metformin. Today, this drug is widely used to reduce blood sugar levels.
The new project was called "Metformin from old age", it will start in 2016 and is now actively collecting funds for clinical trials. Also, the scientific group selects volunteers aged 70-80 years who are predisposed to various diseases (heart attack, senile dementia, cancer, etc.). According to preliminary forecasts, tests of the new medication will last about 7 years.
As already mentioned, based on Metformin created a unique medicine for old age, which has already been tested in laboratory animals. The first studies were carried out on young roundworms, as a result, it was found that the worms not only slowed the aging process, but also the health was much better, in comparison with worms that did not receive medication.
Experiments on rodents have shown that life expectancy increased by about 40%, while the mice taking the drug strengthened the bone system.
The scientists noted that the new medicine does not affect individual diseases, but the general aging process of the body.
If the project "Metaformin from old age" proves to be successful, then on average the life expectancy of people on the planet can increase by 50%, but in addition, the medicine will help to feel younger (according to researchers, in 70 years a person will feel 20-25 ).
Thus, thanks to the new drug, doctors will not have to treat certain diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, senile dementia. With certain indicators, a person will be prescribed a medicine for old age, which will directly affect the biological processes of the body, thereby eliminating a number of "age-related" diseases.
