At the private research university of the State of California. Leland of Stanford has created a new type of battery that not only quickly charges, but also lasts longer, compared to existing today's alkaline or lithium-ion batteries. In addition, the new battery is safe for operation, for example, lithium-ion batteries have the property of exploding, and the fire can spread over fairly long distances.
In the new battery, the researchers used aluminum as an anode (graphite was used as a cathode, an ionic liquid as an electrolyte).
Lithium-ion batteries can cause a fire or explosion due to a short circuit. A new type of battery (aluminum-ion), even if the case is damaged, will continue to work (albeit not for long), but before the explosion or ignition it will not come.
High battery safety is the main advantage, but consumers are more interested in the fast recharging time and the researchers state that their development can fully charge in just one minute.
In addition, the aluminum-ion battery is distinguished by its durability. Conventional lithium-ion batteries operate a thousand charge-charge cycles, according to the developers, a new type of batteries can last about 8,000 cycles, without losing in capacity, so that the device can be used to save renewable energy by local and central energy networks. One member of the research team noted that energy networks need long-lasting batteries that could be quickly charged and given energy, and that such a device is their new battery.
The experimental battery model was developed by the specialists with a flexible body, which will allow it to be used for the production of flexible electronic devices (electronic books, heaters, etc.).
Also, researchers noted that the cost of a new battery will be lower in comparison with those used today, since aluminum is cheaper than lithium. In addition, there is an environmental aspect, since the new batteries are a worthy alternative to disposable alkaline batteries, which are now widely used.
To date, developers note one significant drawback of a prototype battery - voltage. But the researchers note that, although aluminum-lithium is able to reproduce only about two volts of electricity, this is much more than was possible to reach previous researchers using aluminum. And experts are sure that they will be able to achieve more.
One of the researchers who worked on the creation of the new battery noted that with the increase in cathode material, ultimately, it is possible to increase the voltage and energy density, and otherwise the aluminum-lithium battery has all the necessary - inexpensive electrodes, safety, rapid charging, flexibility and long term service.
