According to new UN reports, there has been a reduction of almost 50% in the deaths of children under the age of 5 (from 1990 to 2013). On average, there has been an acceleration in the rate of reduction in child deaths, in a number of countries there has been a three-fold decrease in the number of children under five years old, but such indicators are insufficient to achieve a large-scale target by 2015 to reduce child mortality by 2/3.

As noted in the UN report, in 2013, more than 6 million children under 5 died, for reasons that could be prevented, which is 200,000 fewer than in the previous year. But, despite the downward trend, 17,000 children are still dying every day.

The head of the UNICEF health programs, Mickey Chopra, noted that significant improvements in the reduction of child death rates suggest that the situation may change in countries where resources are limited. Now in the country of any point of the world introduce tried and effective measures that will save thousands of children's lives.

Over the past year for the first 4 weeks after birth nearly 3 million babies died (almost 50% of infant deaths).

This year, UNICEF with the program participants published the first large-scale plan to eliminate the preventable death of children and stillbirths by 2035. According to this plan, basic and effective medical services must be provided in every country, including the period of childbirth and 7 days after birth - an especially dangerous period in the life of newborns, in addition, the quality of medical services for small and sick children should be improved.

Assistant WHO Director-General Flavia Bustreau noted that the civil society is already ready to minimize the preventable death of women in childbirth, infants and children under 5 years old. It is already known how to act better, and the main task for today is to move from the plan to real actions, as happened, for example, in India.

Fly to 5 years mostly die of complications caused by labor before the due date, severe contractions or childbirth, as well as from pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria. Almost half of deaths occur as a result of malnutrition.

Now it is required to increase investments in the health care system, which will help provide high-quality and affordable services to women in childbirth, children, as well as those who most need them.

The UN report also notes that it was possible to achieve significant improvements in reducing the death rate of children under the age of 5 thanks to affordable prices, vaccination, the spread of mosquito nets treated with insecticide drugs, the rehabilitative water-electrolyte treatment for diarrhea, the introduction of therapeutic nutrition .

In the first 4 weeks, the death of children is caused mainly by premature birth, severe delivery. In this case, it is extremely necessary to carry out medical measures related to the protection of women's health.
