To cope with insomnia elderly people will help cherry juice, to this conclusion came the specialists of one of the universities in the United States. As is known, many elderly people suffer from various kinds of sleep disorders, but taking sleeping pills can be dangerous at this age. The use of sour or tart cherry juice (one glass twice a day - in the morning and in the evening) will allow older people to cope with insomnia. In the course of the study, scientists found that after two weeks of drinking cherry juice in elderly patients who had previously suffered from insomnia, the duration of sleep increased by an hour and a half. According to experts, the use of special drugs to normalize sleep is acceptable at a young age, and for the elderly it can be a health hazard. Drugs for insomnia in old age increase the risk of falls, which threatens fractures and even death, while cherry juice is a natural and safe way to solve problems with sleep.
Experts studied the effect on the body of juice of tart varieties of cherries, which are grown mainly in the United States, France, Canada. In the juice of tart cherries, melatonin, a hormone regulating the sleep-wake cycle, was detected. In addition to melatonin, tryptophan, essential amino acids and a precursor of serotonin, which in combination normalize sleep, were detected in the juice. Despite the fact that not a large amount of tryptophan is found in cherry juice, it does not allow splitting of the compound, which increases its effectiveness. As a result, compounds contained in cherry juice increase the bioavailability of tryptophan, which is important for the synthesis of serotonin. As a result, it appears that tryptophan with melatonin in combination helps to regulate sleep.
Earlier, American neurologists discovered a unique system that takes place in our brain. As it turned out, there is a "switch" in the brain that sends a person to the kingdom of Morpheus.
Scientists conducted a study on fruit flies (which is relevant for humans), as a result, they found that there is a certain area in the brain that controls the waking time and a signal is sent from this area that rest is needed. In a case where a person does not sleep too long, the nerve cells that cause drowsiness are activated in the body. These cells begin to give signals in case of body fatigue. When the body is rested, the activity of the cells decreases. This discovery allows us to develop more effective drugs for insomnia.
In humans, and in fruit flies, there is a congestion of similar cells in the brain. It should be noted that during sleep these cells remain active. Cells, by the principle of their action, resemble the operation of a thermostat, which evaluates the temperature and, if necessary, switches on the heating mode. Cells in the brain evaluate the time of wakefulness of the body, if the maximum permissible limit is exceeded, the cells trigger a mechanism that causes a person to sleep.
