Scientists at the University of South Florida and Fudan University in Shanghai have found an increase in brain volume and improved memory and thinking tests in elderly Chinese practitioners of ancient Tai Chi gymnastics three times a week, writes Medical Xpress.

The specialists conducted an 8-month randomized controlled trial in which people who practiced Tai Ji were compared to those who did not do anything similar. The observation showed an increase in brain volume and cognitive improvement in the group, which took part in lively discussions three times a week. In another group, there was a decrease in the volume of the brain, which after a while may cause dementia in people aged 60-70 years.

Previous work has established an increase in brain volume in people who performed aerobic exercises, and in one of them, memory improvement was noted.

"The ability to prevent a decline in brain activity through exercise and increased mental activity can delay the onset of dementia in the elderly," said study author Dr James Mortimer, professor of epidemiology at the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida.

The study addressed the question of whether regular physical and mental loads can contribute to the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. "Epidemiological studies have repeatedly demonstrated that people who exercise and are socially active at the same time have a low risk of developing Alzheimer's in their old age," said D.Mortimer.

Regular classes of ancient Chinese gymnastics eliminate stagnation of blood, positively affect the activity of the gastrointestinal tract, improve metabolism, enhance psychological balance, relieve stress.
