Eating too much red meat and oil can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's.
This conclusion was made by American scientists from Harvard University.
Researchers found that foods that contain high amounts of saturated fat are dangerous to health. So, in older women who leaned on such food, the memory was, in general, worse than that of their peers who avoided saturated fats. And the best memory was noted in those women who actively used monounsaturated fats, contained in olive and sunflower oil, seeds, nuts and avocados.
"If you look at the changes in cognitive function of the brain, you can say that the total amount of fat for memory does not matter," says Dr. Olivia Okereke from Brigham and Women's Hospital, affiliated with Harvard. "But the type of fat is the determining one." Saturated fats are unambiguously harmful for memory, monounsaturated - very useful! "
During the study, more than 6,000 women over the age of 65 periodically underwent memory tests for four years. They also provided detailed information about their diet and lifestyle.
It should be noted that the presence of memory problems is an alarm bell, announcing the danger of developing Alzheimer's and other dementias in the elderly. However, the deterioration of memory does not always lead to this incurable disease.
These studies are published in the journal Annals of Neurology. They appeared almost immediately after another group of scientists proved the link between the risk of Alzheimer's disease and high cholesterol.
