The European Parliament calls on the countries of the European Union, including Latvia, to consider the possibility of registering same-sex relationships (partnership or marriage).
The resolution of the European Parliament, which condemns homophobia, the deputies adopted 430 votes. 105 parliamentarians were against, 59 - abstained.
Latvia was among the countries (Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Lithuania and Hungary), with the example of which the European Parliament indicates shortcomings in laws and regulations on homophobia and violence against representatives of same-sex relationships.
As the DELFI portal wrote earlier, the Association of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transpersonal and their friends "Mosaic" introduced its version of the Law on Partnership Relations to the Seimas, which aroused sharp criticism from then-President Valdis Zatlers, the Society of Lawyers and a number of public organizations, whose opinion such a version of the law places sex minorities in a privileged position.
"Mosaic" emphasizes that the proposed bill "helps both homosexual and heterosexual couples who have not registered a relationship and do not want to do it."
We add that same-sex marriages are legalized in seven European countries - Belgium, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. In another 15 European countries, the law allows for "partnership" relationships of same-sex couples.
