According to the leading national research group in the United States, in 2012, consumer health trends are expected to be related to improving sleep, developing new energy drinks and smartphone applications.

Top 5 trends in health for 2012:

  1. Natural energy drinks - Over the past few years, there has been an increase in the popularity of energy drinks, such as Monster, Red Bull and Burn. These drinks are becoming more popular among adults. Nevertheless, people who adhere to a healthy lifestyle tend to get the same effect from drinks that contain 100% natural ingredients.
  2. Sleep - Studies have shown that lack of sleep is associated with hypertension, weight gain, decreased immunity and depression. In 2012, more people will associate sleep with health. 76% of US citizens would like to improve the quality and quantity of sleep. In addition, the National Sleep Foundation claims that two-thirds of women have constant problems with sleep. According to the World Association of Sleep Medicine, 45% of people in the world suffer from insomnia.
  3. "Flexitarians" - although the number of vegetarians and vegans in the US will remain small, in 2012 more people will become adherents of "Flexitarians" (a lifestyle in which people who knowingly reduce meat consumption for medical reasons still consume animal protein) . One of the evidences of this trend is the growing popularity of relevant groups in social networks.
  4. Digital Motivation - although many people understand the importance of exercise, they are often not motivated enough to make sports a part of their daily lives. However, modern social media platforms provide this motivation in digital form. For example, Reebok promises to give gifts to users of Twitter or Facebook when they complete planned workouts, and the online resource Stikk.com allows users to create "Contract obligations" to quit smoking, lose weight or exercise regularly.
  5. DIY applications for health - DIY's health movement will continue to evolve in 2012 as smartphone applications that will allow users to monitor their health around the clock. Examples of already existing applications are many, from a skin scan sensor that scans and controls birthmarks, to a blood pressure monitor that records the blood pressure of the user and sends it directly to the doctor. By the end of 2012, the number of such health-related applications will increase to 13,000.

Mike Weissman, president of the DGWB Institute (California, USA), said: "These trends are consistent with the growing importance of health for humans." Without exaggeration, health is the new world prestige barometer - which means that most people would prefer to stay healthy and not rich. "
