One third of Ukrainians favor the return of the death penalty and not against the legalization of euthanasia

One third of Ukrainians favor the return of the death penalty and not against the legalization of euthanasia.
This was announced by the director of the communications department of the Gorshenin Institute Vladimir Zastava today at a press conference presenting the results of the telephone survey "The Morality of Ukrainian Society: Attitudes Towards Death."
In particular, more than a third of Ukrainians (38.4%) favor the resumption of the death penalty in the case of grave crimes against the individual. About a quarter (25.7%) consider this measure of punishment permissible in case of rape of minors, and one in six - in the case of production and distribution of drugs (14.9%), bribery in large amounts by government officials (14.3%). It is believed that the death penalty follows the organization of the terrorist act, 6.7%, for stealing state property in especially large amounts - 5.6%, for organizing a military coup - 4.2%, for organizing an assassination attempt on the life of the head of state - 3 , 8%, for treason - 3.2% of the respondents. They favor the return of the death penalty for other crimes - 2.9% of respondents, and 2.6% found it difficult to answer this question. At the same time, 30.8% of Ukrainian citizens oppose the resumption of the death penalty.
More than a third of respondents (37.1%) are categorically against the legalization of euthanasia in Ukraine. At the same time, almost the same number of respondents (36.8%) consider euthanasia acceptable in the case of an incurable disease that brings suffering to the patient. Every sixth Ukrainian (15.7%) believes that suicide with medical help can occur at the will of any person without explaining the reasons for such a decision, and 8.2% admit that you can go for euthanasia if a person is for a long time in a coma, and 2.5% - in old age, after a certain age. Difficult to answer this question 5.3% of respondents.
The expert of the Gorshenin Institute Natalia KLAUNIG noted that in 2007 the number of people who were categorically against euthanasia was much more - 57%.
V. Zastava, commenting on the answers to the first two questions, summed up that Ukrainian society admits that death can be a punishment, but does not view death as a deliverance.
The majority of citizens of Ukraine (59.7%) condemns suicide. Do not condemn about a quarter of respondents (26.1%), and 14.2% found it difficult to answer this question.
Almost half of Ukrainians (45.8%) sometimes think about death. At the same time, one out of every six respondents (15.4%) admitted that he often visited death thoughts. They said that they never think about it, more than a third of respondents - 38.8%.
More than half of the respondents (52.3%) believe that a person usually adheres to moral norms by internal conviction. About a third (35.8%) believe that a person observes moral standards in order to look good in the eyes of others. The answer "other" to this question was given by 2.4% of respondents, and 9.5% found it difficult to answer it.
V. Zastava noted that, in general, only half of Ukrainians believe that moral standards must be followed by internal conviction, and this figure has decreased compared to 2007.
According to N. Clauning, today there is a trend that it is not very fashionable to be moral, since morality does not promote the making of money.
V. Zastava also stressed that today the society is only reassessing values. In particular, the attitude towards sex, to people with non-traditional orientation changes.
"Figuratively speaking, the society of the Soviet Union, as it were, visited the nursery group, and you know, childishly, it turned a blind eye to a whole series of real and ambiguous problems, considering, for example, that sex, prostitution or unconventional sexual orientation simply does not exist. Today, the society has moved into a preparatory group, already recognizing the existence of a number of problems, but still quite certain taboos. What will happen in ten years - we'll see, "V. Zastava noted.
The telephone poll "Morality of Ukrainian society: attitude towards death" was conducted by the Gorshenin Institute from 11 to 13 October. In total, according to a random sample, 1000 respondents aged 18 and over were interviewed in all the regional centers of Ukraine, the cities of Kiev and Sevastopol. Quotas were the region of residence, sex and age of respondents. The error in the representativeness of the study does not exceed +/- 3.2%.
