The level of soil contamination with radioactive substances in the areas around the emergency nuclear power plant "Fukushima-1" is comparable to the figures recorded after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, Japanese media reported on Wednesday.
According to experts from the Japan Nuclear Waste Management Organization, the level of cesium contamination in an area of 600 square kilometers to the northeast of the nuclear power plant is 1.48 million becquerels per square kilometer.
This level of pollution caused the emergency evacuation of Chernobyl residents in 1986, the reports say.
Meanwhile, the area affected by the accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant is 10-20% of the territory contaminated by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.
Prior to the return of residents to their homes in the affected area, large-scale soil clearance will be carried out, the Japan Nuclear Waste Management Organization reported.
As previously reported, the head of the operator of the NPP "Fukushima-1" Terso Masataka Shimizu took responsibility for the accident at the nuclear power plant and resigned.
In addition, in Japan there is evacuation of residents of settlements located outside the previously established exclusion zone around the emergency nuclear power plant.
