In 2008, the Sleep Medicine Association organized World Sleep Day, which has since been celebrated every year in March. This year, the date fell on March 13.

This holiday is specially created to draw attention to the problem of sleep, which is becoming more relevant in the modern world.

Each year, the organizers of the holiday hold it in the appropriate theme, this year it was decided to hold the World Sleeping Day under the slogan "A strong sleep brings health and happiness." On this day, high-quality healthy sleep is promoted, various social advertisements are organized, and meetings and meetings are held where specialists discuss various issues related to sleep problems and how they affect the life of the individual and society.

A person sleeps about 1/3 of his life. There are two phases of sleep - fast and slow, which differ in their functional meaning. During sleep, there is a restoration of psychological defense, volumes of short-term memory, emotional balance. According to the research, a person should sleep at least 7 hours a day, but because of the modern rhythm of life, more people are denying themselves this pleasure, which causes chronic lack of sleep. Lack of sleep accelerates the aging process in the body, negatively affects the work of the brain, changes the hormonal background, increases the load on the organs, especially the heart.

Constant nedosypy can provoke problems with excess weight, hypertension, as well as increase the risk of diabetes.

Sleep disorders can manifest themselves in different ways - insomnia, excessive sleepiness, there is also a violation of the sleep process (frequent awakening, inability to fall asleep, etc.). All sleep problems rarely act as primary symptoms, they are usually a consequence of the development of the disease.

Problems of sleep and methods of treatment are studied by experts - somnologists. In most cases, medications are prescribed, but this method of therapy requires maximum caution and does not tolerate self-treatment, since all without exception, hypnotic drugs have side effects, in particular, almost all cause addiction.

But before prescribing medication, the specialist will recommend certain rules, the so-called sleep hygiene, which is effective for many patients.

For a good and full night rest, you need to observe a few simple rules, in the first place, you need to go to bed and wake up at the same time. For a few hours before bedtime, do not consume spirits, reduce consumption (or stop altogether) coffee, energy, chocolate, quit smoking, spicy, heavy, fatty foods. Also to improve the quality of sleep is recommended to lead an active lifestyle, perhaps enroll in the gym or, in extreme cases, engage in daily walking tours in the fresh air.

Important for the quality of sleep is bed linen, bed, mattress. The temperature in the bedroom should be comfortable for you, there should not be any loud noises and too much light.
