A new study by scientists has shown that men who have a passion for fast food have reduced sperm production. Conversely, high consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish and vegetable oils, leads to increased sperm concentration.
During the study, American scientists asked men about their gastronomic preferences and took their sperm for analysis over a period of 4 years.
Compared with those who followed healthy eating guidelines, men who exceeded the recommended fat intake had 43% lower sperm production and 38% lower sperm concentration (the number of sperm in a unit of semen volume).
This once again confirms how important a healthy diet is for maintaining fertility in men.
The study also found that men who consumed omega-3 fatty acids had healthier sperm composition.
Doctors are very concerned about the trend towards fast food consumption, citing the fact that it leads to other serious health problems, including cardiovascular diseases.
However, it should be noted that 71% of the study participants were overweight, which could also affect sperm quality. In addition, it should be noted that none of the participants had sperm production and concentration below the norm. However, if we compare the two categories - those who consumed saturated fats and those who preferred omega-3 polyunsaturated fats - the level of sperm production and concentration was recorded accordingly: low or high.
Of course, in order to unequivocally state that saturated fats directly negatively affect the quantity and composition of sperm, additional research is needed, but one thing is clear: a healthy lifestyle, in particular proper nutrition, is important not only for reproductive function, but also for maintaining good health and well-being in general.
