Today is World Heart Day, which was first held in 1999 on the initiative of the World Heart Federation, the WHF (World Heart Federation) and was supported by WHO and UNESCO.

The motto of this year: "One world, one house, one heart." The annual carrying out of such an event is very important, as heart and vascular diseases remain the main cause of mortality of the world's population and take about 17 million lives each year. The main diseases - ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension with its complications - myocardial infarction and strokes.

In Ukraine, the most frequent cause of death and disability of the population are: arterial hypertension - 32.5%, ischemic heart disease - 25.6%, strokes - 19.2%. And over the past 10 years, the prevalence of diseases of the cardiovascular system has increased more than 2 times, and the incidence - by 55%.

The mortality from cardiovascular diseases in Ukraine in 2010 was about 500 thousand people.

The number of patients who need surgical intervention at the heart, reaches 40 thousand per year. And in Ukraine, only about 15 thousand heart operations are performed, whereas in Germany, 80 million people - more than 200 thousand operations per year.

According to the World Heart Federation, 80% of deaths from heart attack and stroke can be prevented if the main risk factors of these diseases are controlled: smoking, unhealthy diet, hypodynamia.
