International Day of Friendship is one of the youngest holidays in the calendar. The decision to hold it was taken by the UN General Assembly on April 27, 2011 at its 65th session. The ideological basis for the new date was the Declaration and Program of Action on a Culture of Peace and the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Benefit of All the World (it covered 2001-2010).
The United Nations Organization invited state structures, as well as international and regional organizations, to celebrate this day in accordance with the cultural traditions of a particular country. Especially in the UN resolution, the importance of a new date in strengthening friendly relations between different peoples is emphasized. "Friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and provide an opportunity to build bridges between societies that honor cultural diversity," the document says.
In addition, one of the goals of the International Day of Friendship is to involve young people, including future leaders, in public activities aimed at respecting different cultures.
At present, in many countries around the world, activities related to the promotion of friendship are held every year. From now on, the Friendship Day program will also be added to their list.
