World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10 to strengthen commitment and encourage action to prevent this phenomenon worldwide. On average, about 3,000 people commit suicide every day. For every one who commits suicide, 20 or more people attempt suicide.

Together with its sponsor, the International Association for Suicide Prevention, WHO and other partners advocate for appropriate treatment and aftercare for people who have attempted suicide, as well as more balanced media coverage of suicide.

WHO believes that governments should develop policy frameworks for national suicide prevention strategies. At the local level, policy statements and research findings should be translated into programmes and prevention measures for the population.

According to statistics, in recent years the number of suicides among young people aged 15 to 19 has increased in Ukraine.

Experts explain this by the lack of motivation for life among young people.

Let us recall that it was previously reported that the number of suicides in Ukraine in 2009 alone increased by 2.7% (or 259 cases) compared to 2008. This is evidenced by data from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
