When compiling the ranking of the most comfortable countries for childbirth, factors such as maternal mortality during childbirth, the use of modern contraceptives by women and the literacy rate among the female population of working age were taken into account.
In its report, the charity Save the Children said that mothers in Scandinavian countries can feel completely safe.
The most favorable conditions for childbirth are created in Norway (first place). Second place is taken by Australia and Iceland. Then come Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The USA took only 31st place.
Among the CIS countries, Estonia took the best positions – 18th place. Russia took 38th place, and Ukraine – 39th place.
The worst situation with motherhood, say Save the Children experts, is observed on the African continent (8 countries out of the 10 worst countries in the rating). Here, about 2 million newborns die every year on the first day after birth. The main reasons for high infant mortality are infections, prematurity and complications during childbirth. In these countries, one in six children dies before reaching five days after birth. Almost 50% of the population does not have access to quality water.
Afghanistan (164th place) closes the rating. Comparing the countries in the first and last ten of the rating, in the most disadvantaged countries the expectant mother has a 25 times higher risk of losing her child and a 500 times higher risk of dying herself during childbirth or throughout pregnancy.
