Modern technologies have become so firmly entrenched in our lives that even during vacations we can no longer part with them. Moreover, vacations now apparently consist of using the Internet, computers, phones and other gadgets.
Just twenty years ago, we had to send a postcard and wait in line at the post office to tell our relatives and friends how great our holiday was. Now, everything has become much easier.
Wi-Fi zones are now available in most civilized tourist spots. Lying on a sun lounger by the pool, we can find out about everything that interests us: the schedule of our football team's meetings, the weather for tomorrow, or which restaurant to go to tonight. While applying sunscreen, you can send an SMS to your friends or an MMS with the view from your room to your colleagues - let them rejoice in the office.
According to a study by scientists from Michigan State University, easy access to the Internet and ubiquitous personal devices are changing the way we spend our holidays. As ScienceDaily reports, smartphone use on vacation has increased by an average of three times, mobile phone use by 15%, and the amount of surfing the Internet has increased from 70% at home to 80% on vacation.
This is already looking like an obsessive addiction. iPads and smartphones are, of course, meant to make our lives easier, but aren't we losing more than we gain? After all, the main goal of a vacation and tourism is a change of scenery, communication with nature and new people. It would be good if we didn't forget about this.
If you feel you can't resist this habit, go on a vacation away from modern technology. You can go hiking with friends or hide from civilization in one of the bungalows in Bora Bora.
