Men in the UK have gained an average of eight kilograms in weight over 14 years, Sky News reports. This data was obtained in the course of a study conducted by a group of specialists led by Peter Scarborough from Oxford University. A report on their work was published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Scarborough's group calculated the average weight gain of UK residents between 1986 and 2000. According to the study, the weight of British men increased by 7.7 kilograms. British women, in turn, gained an average of 5.4 kilograms. The scientists also analyzed the caloric content of food consumed by the British during the specified period of time. Based on the data obtained, they calculated the expected weight gain of the male and female population of the country. The researchers found that in accordance with the increase in the amount of energy consumed with food, the British should have gained an average of 4.7 kilograms. At the same time, the average weight of British women should have increased by 6.4 kilograms. Scarborough said the findings suggested that obesity among men in the UK was not just due to the amount of calories they ate, but also to a lack of exercise. According to the National Health Service, 24 per cent of British men and 25 per cent of women are obese. Thirty-two per cent of British women and 42 per cent of men are overweight.
