The first association that comes to mind when the word "fast food" is mentioned is, of course, the "Golden Arches", but the concept of fast food establishments was known in Ancient Rome, long before the emergence of the McDonald's empire.

The best fast food chains in the world take the quality of the food they serve very seriously: no frozen burgers or soggy fries - just freshly made ramen, freshly baked baguettes for sandwiches, and freshly caught fish for anyone looking for a convenient, quick meal.

For travelers looking to sample local cuisine, fast food restaurants offer a convenient and often inexpensive option.

The fast food restaurants that Travel and Leisure has selected from thousands of different chains across Europe as an alternative to the ubiquitous hamburger may not offer you culinary masterpieces, but they will at least give you a taste of the local cuisine and culture. So, when traveling around the world, look for the following fast food restaurants:

1. Rossopomodoro, Italy

Italians take pizza so seriously that even fast food chains have been transformed into first-class Neapolitan trattorias with excellent service, delicious recipes and a beautiful interior.

What to try: Maruzzella pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella, anchovies and olives.

2. Teremok, Russia

Since its inception in 1988, the owners of this chain have opened 111 restaurants and more than 80 kiosks on the streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg. And although the menu includes soups, porridges and salads, the real hit of this establishment is pancakes. These thin, triangular-shaped pancakes will surprise you with the variety of their fillings, both sweet and spicy.

What to try: pancakes with red caviar.

3. Pret a Manger, UK

The British chain of snack bars created the prototype of the well-known triangular sandwiches that can be found both in the shops of their hometown and in numerous cafes. But in the original Pret-a-manger sandwich, everything is different: the food is fresh (the chances of getting yesterday's salad here are zero, since at the end of the day everything left is donated to homeless shelters), and there are few seats: it is assumed that you will grab a sandwich, a cup of soup or coffee on the go and go have lunch on a bench in the park. In addition to sandwiches, Pret-a-manger is worth trying divine oatmeal and homemade yogurts with fruit, granola and honey.

What to try: Chicken and avocado sandwich

4. Nordsee, Germany

Many people, when talking about fast food, do not mean steamed fish - or fish at all. However, the German chain Nordsee specializes mainly in fish dishes and seafood. Cod, flounder, pollock, salmon - the emphasis is on fresh fish. In Europe, this is the largest chain of snack bars on the continent that prepares seafood.

What to try: The signature dish is the Nordsee plate with steamed cod fillet in a mustard sauce with spring onions, vegetables, parsley and new potatoes.

5. Jensen's Bøfhus, Denmark

The name of the Danish chain of family restaurants Jensen's Bøfhus translates as "meat restaurant", and indeed here you will be fed very tasty steaks and entrecotes. Another advantage of "meat restaurants" is children's menus, organization of holidays and competitions, playrooms - these restaurants are perfect for children.

What to try: Steak with whiskey sauce, roasted potatoes and grilled tomatoes

6. Maison Eric Kayser, France

Eric Kayser is a fourth-generation baker and a significant figure in modern baking. His bakeries are famous in France and beyond. Eric Kayser bakeries amaze with the variety of bakery products: traditional baguette, small loaf or even yeast bread. Also, a variety of French pastries (croissant, chocolate bun), cakes to order, fresh sandwiches will pleasantly surprise the most demanding visitors.

What to try: A sandwich made from fresh, crispy baguette, ham and Emmental cheese.
