Korean doctors have proposed an alternative method of treating knee arthritis based on the use of a special jelly. Experts claim that the jelly, made from stem cells contained in umbilical cord blood, has the property of strengthening joints. At the moment, the new method of treatment is being developed in detail by laboratory assistants at the university.
Osteoarthritis of the knee joint is a slowly progressing but quite serious disease, which is difficult to diagnose at the initial stage. The disease mainly affects elderly people and people of advanced age, who, due to age, experience a slow and therefore barely noticeable depletion of cartilage in the knee joint.
The first signs of arthritis of the knee joint are pain of a diffuse nature, which gradually becomes constant, swelling, inflammatory processes, which are accompanied by an increase in temperature. At the slightest suspicion of the disease, it is worth undergoing an examination by a doctor, since at the moment at a late and terminal stage the disease can even lead to disability.
The cartilage of the knee joint serves as a "cushion", provides mobility and ease of movement of a person. With age, due to the fact that the cartilage of the knee joint wears out, a person may limp, dull pain in the joint limits the speed of movement. Standard treatment for arthritis usually consists of relieving pain in the joint with ointments, painkillers, as well as with the help of therapeutic exercise and health gymnastics.
Doctors believe that the cartilaginous tissue in the knee joint does not have the ability to quickly renew and regenerate on its own due to insufficient blood supply. This fact explains that with age, the cartilaginous tissue "wears out" and is practically not subject to restoration. In addition to painkillers and physiotherapy techniques, one can single out the surgical method (which is desirable to avoid, unless the disease, of course, is at a very late stage) and folk "grandfather's" methods. Only a qualified specialist can select the correct therapy, who can accurately determine the stage of development of the disease and note possible contraindications.
Korean scientists claim that they will soon be able to offer an alternative treatment for osteoarthritis that will significantly alleviate the suffering of patients without surgical intervention. The university staff gained this confidence after conducting animal studies, which determined the positive effect of the new drug on cartilage tissue. A gelatinous material with restorative properties was created from umbilical cord blood stem cells. The results of the experiment showed that this substance is capable of strengthening and restoring damaged cartilage tissue, which will help in the treatment of knee arthritis in the future. Scientists are confident that timely use of the new drug will make it possible to abandon surgical intervention in the treatment of osteoarthritis in the near future.
